Identity

I was a little confused by verses 2&3 in chapter 11:
"2 When John [the Baptist] heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, 'Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?'"
Why did John ask that when in chapter 3 he seemed to show that he knew Jesus was the Christ?

  1. I think sitting in prison can make you have some doubts about many things. Don't forget that many thought the Messiah would come in partially as a military ruler too, not just a spiritual ruler. Maybe John the B was thinking that Jesus should be starting to raise a rebellion by now, or bring angelic war against the romans to liberate Israel (and liberate him from prison). I wonder if he knew deep down, and wanted to believe, but life wasn't unfolding like he thought it would at that moment so he began to doubt himself.

  2. Very good point! I hadn't thought about that.
