What did He mean??

And so it was written,

"Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead."

- Matthew 8:22

What did Christ mean when He said this to the disciple who wanted to follow Him? From our perspective, wouldn't burying our father be something of importance? Then why, in this instance, was Christ so incessant on having this follower leave his dead father to be buried by others?

  1. When I was reading that passage this morning I was using a life application bible and it offered a few explanations of what this could mean.. It's possible the man's father hadn't died yet and he was saying "Let me wait until my father dies then I'll burry him.. then I'll be ready to follow you." I'm not sure if this is right.. but I think if that is really what happened the basic lesson is that Jesus doesn't want us to keep putting off following him for anything, other important things compete for our attention but ultimately we have to follow Jesus and choose to be obedient to Him when he calls.. no matter how convenient or inconvenient the timing seems to us.

By the way, thanks to everyone who was on the panel last night.. It was really awesome and God used so many of the things you all said to speak into my life. :)

  2. Bonnie...

What a wonderful perspective! I couldn't agree more in that Christ has called us all to move toward Him without reservation. Sometimes, as we spoke about last night, we have trouble saying "no," and moving forward with our personal relationship with God. Nothing takes precedence over this walk...

    Blessings,
